And while the school has nearly doubled the amount of students taking AP exams, the percentage who score a 3 or above &8212; the level often needed for a college to award credit &8212; has held steady at about 90 percent.
I want to emphasize the level of instruction within the building, Principal Vincent Maniscalco said. We have wonderful kids here, but it&8217;s the instruction that has to do with (the success) also.
My dad graduated from Stuyvesant and elected to become a NYC Police Officer. He always said that McKee Tech. was as good as Stuyvesant.
SI Tech is a great school, but the Board of Ed should be embarassed how they maintain the football/baseball fields. Its time for a new field!!
Erika Chan, Liana B. Kass, Adam H. Kruchkow, Thomas R. Stilwell and Flora Tan are the Tech students who are among 16,000 semifinalists in the prestigious scholarship program.
guess, who am I...
The report examined nearly 600 schools that qualified for the Gold, Silver and Honorable Mention lists of the U.S. News Best High Schools, and then evaluated their students&8217; participation rates and performances on Advance Placement exams in math and science.
The rankings are based on figures from 2008, and the AP program has grown considerably since then, he said. That year, 507 students took AP exams. In 2011, just over 900 students took them.
SI Tech is broken and cannot be fixed, its assets must be sold to the highest bidder...etc!
It is a great school. Just look at the colleges its grads are accepted into. Congrats to all. As for Bklyn. Tech and Stuy being better, on what research is your info. based??
A special thank you to Mr. Bailey and Mr. Staten Island Tech tops NYC specialized high schools in U.S. News and World Report ranking staten island technical high schoolToder, and the other instructors for the vision and dedication to their students in what was the hidden gem (no longer hidden) of Staten Island Public High Schools.
I am proud to say that I was a student in the very first Computer Science class ever taught in a Staten Island high school. I will never forget our math teacher telling us that there was this new paradigm computers which was going to change society as we knew it. He asked for volunteers to sign up for a zero period (early in the morning) class. It was fun!
This will be something special to be able to share with everybody, Erlenwein said. Another reason why they should be looking at our school.
The best way to do that would be to show the colleges how capable they would be in a college classroom while still in high school, Erlenwein said.
We&8217;re excited about this news, said Mark Erlenwein, assistant principal for science, math and engineering. It&8217;s really the end result of an emphasis we started, about five years ago, on expanding our Advstaten island technical high schoolanced Placement Curriculum and really working on the college readiness piece.
We literally doubled all the AP courses that we previously offered in the area of science, Erlenwein said. We even added psychology.
The New Dorp school also doubled their offerings for AP calculus classes, and is rolling out an AP statistics class. In addition to AP courses, the school also offers other classes for college credit through the College Now program.
Staten Island Tech is a great school. The students there are attentive and focused on learning, unlike a lot of the kids in the regular high schools.
Another Tech student, Chad A. Small, was among more than 1,600 students nationwide who were designated semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, a scholarship that recognizes outstanding black students. Sarah Aly, a Curtis High School student, is also a semifinalist for the award.
The school has earned plenty of recognition of late &8212; six students from the school were named semi-finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Congratulations to the students at Tech, they are top notch.
Staten Island Tech. has been a great school since its inception. Staten Island Tech. began its existence as McKee Tech. I attended McKee Tech. when it was located in the original old grimy building in St. George. Not only did we receive a phenomenal education focused on Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, but we also graduated with a full complement of the sciences and mathematics (i.e., Calculus).
It&8217;s nice to get some affirmation and confirmation that what we&8217;re doing is a difference in their lives, Erlenwein said.
My son was a member of this class and there were constant comparisons made between the test kids and the power score kids. These comparisons were made openly by teachers, administrators and at PTA meetings and the test kids were always portrayed in a negative light. I, therefore, find it ironic that the same administrator who openly criticized the effects of the test kids is now touting their accomplishments.
However, both my wife and I have Computer Science and Math degrees, and we have had great jobs for the past 30 years.
Somehow I missed being Bill Gates.
Probably based upon the assumption of some who post here feel that nothing good is located on SI. Theres no need for anyone to put down SI, its own residents do it themselves.
Students aspiring to study in competitive fields like engineering are looking for ways to signal to universities that they are ready for the tough course material, Erlenwein said.
Tech and Stuy being better, on what research is your info. based??
Those students will compete for about 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, worth more than $2.4 million.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island Technical High School only joined the elite rank of the city&8217;s specialized high schools six years ago &8212; but it has already edged out the others to earn the title of best city high school for math and science.
One other borough student, Matthew P. Barouch of Staten Island Academy, earned a spot as a semifinalist. All the semifinalists will compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $34 million.
I go to tec and would like cleaner bathrooms. Im a freshman and i only saw 1 sanitation engineer in the few weeks i attened. Otherwise its fun; people get along relatively well.
It is nice to be on the list alongside other specialized city high schools, he said, regardless of exactly where they landed. The recognition also comes at a great time &8212; Tech&8217;s open house is next Wednesday.
Erlenwein said the new programs, hard work from students and teachers, and listening to student feedback help make the school great.
Staten Island Tech tops NYC specialized high schools in U.S. News and World Report ranking staten island technical high school,Staten Island Technical High Schoolranked 13th on U.S. News and World Report&8217;s ranking of the best math and science high schools in the nation. That&8217;s better than other long-heralded New York City specialized schools, including Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, which placed 18th, Brooklyn Technical High School, 50th, and the Bronx School of Science, 51st.
As the parent of a Tech student, I must say this acknowledgement is long overdue. Congrats to the students and culty of Staten Island Tech. Go Seagulls!!
well done to the students, culty and parents of this educational gem...
In the last five years, the school has worked to build on its success, adding another section of AP classes in chemistry and physics, and two more sections in biology.
I think it is ironic that one of the accomplishments that is highlighted by Tech administrators in this article is the increase of students in AP classes. This is probably a direct result of increased enrollment which stems from its becoming a specialized high school. The freshman class of 2006 was the first group of test kids and their enrollment was significantly larger than the previous years power score kids.
